A Romantic Hotel in Montreal's Charming Old Town

1/4

As soon as you step through The Nelligan’s front door, an old world charm descends like a spell. Look around and you’ll feel the pull of the dark wood and polished brass furnishings inviting you to tuck in and stay awhile. Comprising four buildings from the 1850s, the hotel has 105 rooms, including 59 suites and two penthouses. Exposed brick walls, a four-story atrium and an outdoor terrace for stunning summer views.

Choose the 500-square-foot Romance Suite and unwind in a Jacuzzi tub for two, snuggle in a separate living room in front of an electric fireplace, or gaze out onto the historic streets of Old Montreal before diving into the plush linens of a king-sized bed. If you want to step it up a notch, opt for the 830-square-foot, one-bedroom penthouse with a Jacuzzi for two, electric fireplace, spacious living area, panoramic views of the Old Port and a private terrace. Want to whip up your own aphrodisiac-infused meal? Just lay in the supplies and take advantage of the unit’s fully equipped kitchenette.

If you’d rather be pampered in one of the city’s best restaurants, slip downstairs to Verses for some sophisticated contemporary cuisine. There’s a comprehensive wine list and creative cocktails, as well. If it’s a bit of light fare you crave, then nip into Mechant Boeuf Bar-Brasserie and partake in the raw bar or dig into the late-night menu.

A Romantic Hotel in Montreal With a Rooftop Terrace

1/4

Located in Old Montreal opposite the city’s grand Notre-Dame Basilica (where Celine Dion got married), Hotel Place d’Armes is housed in four striking 19th century neoclassical buildings.

During check in, a modern, elegant lobby instantly puts you at ease before you head to one of the 116 luxury guest rooms, 48 suites or five penthouses. Exposed brick walls and hardwood floors feature in most rooms, along with walk-in showers and Nespresso machines. Opt for a Superior King and get toasty in front of the electric fireplace, or pop for a suite with a stand-alone jetted tub.

For total togetherness and relaxation, book a hammam session in the Rainspa on the hotel’s third floor. The traditional Middle Eastern steam bath is scented with eucalyptus, stimulates circulation and eases sore muscles. Pampered and revived, you and your sweetheart can head to Brasserie 701 where you’ll be transported to Paris, circa the Belle Époque. Here you can nibble on rich Quebec cheeses and sip your favourite Champagne. If your appetite is veering more towards sushi, try the hotel’s KYO Bar Japonais, famous for its sake tasting menu. In summer, find a perch at the Terrasse Place d’Armes, a rooftop bar where you can stare into each other’s eyes, or out at the stunning views of Place d’Armes Square and Old Montreal.

Romance with a River View in Montreal

1/4

Rustic, warm and filled with history, the Auberge du Vieux Port is in Old Montreal, next to the St. Lawrence River. Formerly two 19th century warehouses, the hotel has 45 rooms with pine floors, and some have post and beam ceilings and stone or brick walls. Charming wrought-iron bedsteads and casement windows immediately whisk you to another era. Spring for the bigger Premier rooms at 375 square feet and dive into the double therapeutic bathtub for some dreamy relaxing.

Afterwards, cosy up in front of the electric fireplace and decide if you’ll go to the hotel’s Taverne Gaspar to share some charcuterie and Quebec cheese or duck confit poutine, or wander further afield to one of the excellent restaurants in the area.

On a warm summer evening, another choice is to bask on the hotel’s Terrasse sur l’Auberge with a cocktail and nibbles as you drink in the view of the Old Port and St. Lawrence River. From June to August, the love sparks really fly if you gaze up at the International Fireworks Competition. If you’ve booked the “Soak Up Romance” package, there’s nothing nicer that curling up and cuddling while room service delivers champers and a basket of tasty treats for breakfast.

An Old Montreal Hotel with Bikes for Rent

1/4

Good things come in small packages which is certainly true of the 28-room Le Petit Hotel & Café. The century-old building sits on one of Montreal’s first public squares on historic Saint Paul Street. Check in and you’ll notice the front desk doubles as a cute little coffee counter, pumping out delicious java and baked goods 24-7.

The Quebec-designed furnishings are funky and modern, local newspapers are available in the lobby, and the luxury platform beds feature goose-down comforters and pillows by Marie L’Oie that will make you and your loved one feel like you are floating on a cloud. Opt for a L (large) room and you’ll get 375 square feet of sunny space, with floor to ceiling windows, exposed brick walls, flat-screen TV and multi-jet shower.

Want to get a little outdoor exercise? Borrow the hotel’s two guest bicycles and go for a spin in fascinating Old Montreal where you just might get lost, and love it. Another idea when the weather isn’t cooperating is to hold hands and go for an underground city tour that leaves daily from the hotel at 10 a.m.

A Romantic Montreal Hotel for Design Lovers

1/4

A surprise awaits you behind the 19th century Montreal greystone façade of Hotel Gault. The retrofitted, five-storey building from 1871 features 30 hyper-modern suites with vast French windows, custom oak cabinetry and space-age Italian furnishings. Formerly the headquarters of a prosperous textile company, the building has preserved a few of the original interior accents, including cast-iron columns.

Book a 500-square-foot suite with a queen or king-sized bed, and revel in the bathroom with sumptuous tub and heavenly heated floor. If you’d rather watch the sun go down from your own private balcony, go for a Terrace suite. The Deluxe Terrace is a self-contained, 600-square-foot haven with a 100-square-foot patio, kitchenette, and 46-inch LED HD TV.

If, for some reason, you and your honey want to leave your nest, the hotel bar serves delicious concoctions such as the Mapletini, made with sweet maple wine, maple vodka and fresh lime juice. In the morning head to the Gault Restaurant and nibble on fresh fruit, or tuck into a gourmet crepe stuffed with ham, cheddar cheese and béchamel sauce. The restaurant isn’t open for dinner, but no worries, there’s 24-hour room service.

A Romantic Montreal Hotel with a Deluxe Spa

1/4

Serving up romantic luxury since 1912, the Ritz-Carlton Montreal recently underwent a $200-million transformation, adding extra polish to her glowing, five-star reputation.

Like it hot or cool? There’s intuitive memory of a guest’s temperature preference upon check in. Motion sensors activate lights to guide you in the darkness and an exclusive pillow menu guarantees a pleasant visit from the Sandman.

If you are feeling like royalty (Megan and Harry, perhaps?), opt for elegant afternoon tea in the Palm Court. Or, you can whirl each other around the indoor, saltwater pool then get relaxed and rejuvenated with a side-by-side Couple’s Massage at the hotel’s St. James Spa. Later, you can toast each other in North America’s only Dom Pérignon Bar, then take a table at Maison Boulud where you can watch the action in the open kitchen or simply savour the chef’s modern interpretations of classic French cuisine.
